The Truth, the Whole Truth, and Nothing But the Truth: An Indexed Bibliography to the Literature ofTruth Maintenance Systems

چکیده
Papers that explicitly deal with issues on truth maintenance; and (3) Papers that deal with applications of truth maintenance and discuss the issues at some important length (thus we have excluded papers that reference truth maintenance as a possible technique to be used without any further discussion of how it could be used). We did not attempt to present the material from a tutorial perspective and thus we assume some previous knowledge in the area of truth maintenance systems. We are also aware that a work of this kind can never be complete and that, if not updated, will become obsolete a short time after publication. We will try to publish updates to the bibliography and we will be very glad to be informed about new work being developed in the area of truth maintenance, as well as work in this area which was not mentioned here due to lack of our knowledge. Truth maintenance is a collection of techniques for doing belief revision. A truth maintenance system’s task is to maintain a set of beliefs in such a way that (1) they are not known to be contradictory and (2) no belief is kept without a reason. Jon Doyle [Doyle 79] is recognized to have initiated the work on the field with the development of the TMS (Truth Maintenance System), the first system where the dependencies among propositions and the depen‘I can’t believe that!’ said Alice ‘Can’t you?’ the Queen said in a pitying tone. ‘Try again: draw a long breadth, and shut your eyes.’ Alice laughed. ‘There’s no use trying,’ she said: ‘one can’t believe i m p o s s i b l e things.’ ‘I daresay you haven’t had much practice,’ said the Queen. ‘When I was your age, I always did it for half-an-hour a day. Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.’ Lewis Carroll, Through the Looking Glass

Truth in the Context of Christian Faith and its Relation to Other Religions
In the following reflections on the understanding of truth in regard to Christian faith (or even in regard to religious faith, experience, and language in general), I advocate a relational interpretation of truth. Truth in that sense is understood not primarily as an intellectual assertion but as a qualification of a dynamic, existential, personal relation. Truth is the trustworthiness of that ...

On one side, “the divine wisdom and knowledge-centric character of the celestial human soul and human self, and the never-satisfying natural urge of humans for truth-finding and scholarly dynamism” is an obvious truth, and prideful, to all thinkers. This truth bears nothing but “a kind of dynamic, scholarly life”, a type of lifestyle that can be achieved only in a dynami...
متن کاملAn Investigation of Norm of Belief’s Proper Formulation
That falsity is a defect in belief can be captured with a prohibitive norm holding that truth is the necessary condition for permissibility of belief. Furthermore, such a formulation avoids the difficulties encountered in earlier literature that offered prescriptive norms. The normativity of belief thesis is widely discussed in the literature. I criticise bi-conditional formulation of the norm ...

This is a commentary on the article ‘The rise of post-truth populism in pluralist liberal democracies: challenges for health policy.’ It critically examines two of its key concepts: populism and ‘post truth.’ This commentary argues that there are different types of populism, with unclear links to impacts, and that in some ways, ‘post-truth’ has resonances with arguments advanced in the period a...

One of the most important contemporary theoretical approaches that can be used to analyze works of art is the theories of Jacques Lacan (1901-1980), a French post-structuralist psychoanalyst. By combining psychoanalysis, philosophy, linguistics, and anthropology, he analyzes the world of the human subject’s mind in a series of intertwined and extensive cultural and social relationships. This art...
